Motto “unite for gender equality for a better life”

3 LEARNINGS

1.    EQUALITY IS GUARANTEED UNDER MANY DOCUMENTS, BUT NOT INTERNALIZED YET.

People of all times considered equality as a must and they addressed it as being able to reach the facilities, use the resources and have rights regardless of their gender, age, roots etc.

This is an anti-discrimination approach and is accepted by every country, institution, and company. The UN Charter and many constitutions have powerful rights-based clauses.

The business world has agreed upon “the good governance” principles (participation, responsibility, accountability, transparency, justice, consistency, effectiveness, rule of law) and signed the UN Global Compact, WEPs and Responsible Investment Principles documents to underline that they respect labour rights, power of good places to work and employee brand.

2.    PEOPLE NEED TO BE EQUAL, BE INCLUDED AND BE RESPECTED IN TERMS OF DIVERSITY TO BE EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE IN BUSINESS LIFE.

Every 8 years, one generation passes. This means we have colleagues from 5 different generations in the business environment. People of different ages have different needs and expectations. We must practice “decent negotiation ways” to be able for sustainable consensus.

Today’s human power prioritizes the climate of equality in workplace. They are not hesitant to say that they prefer to earn less if they are in an equal, inclusive and diverse atmosphere.

Diversity means, the company is open to employ people from different ages, different ethnic roots, different genders, different religions etc.

Inclusion means, the company serves ways to each team member ways, projects and practices to let them perform their potential.

The data shows that diverse and inclusive teams work faster than homogeneous ones. Moreover, their decision quality is 1,5 times better than the others.

The companies have discovered the power of diversity and inclusion.

3.    GENDER INEQUALITY PRACTICES ARE DEEPLY EMBEDDEDIN OUR DAILY LIVES. WE HAVE TO WORK ON THEM FOR AWARENESS AND BEHAVIORAL CHANGE.

Gender-equal language is a new beginning! Language is generating discrimination practices among generations.

Use humankind, instead of mankind. Avoid adding “female” to occupations related to men (female president, female engineer, female CEO).

Treat your daughters and sons equally. Act decently about their pocket money, time of coming home at night, rights within the house, rights to have a separate room, rights to indicate their preferences about family life.

Beware that only proficiency and competence should be considered when deciding whom to promote.

Avoid being over-demanding to female candidates.

Avoid bro-culture and mansplaining in departments. Be inclusive about social activities and chose genderless games and entertainment.

Feel free to set the table together, wash the dishes together, earn and spend together, take the car to the repairers together.

Gender equality makes life easier and creates happier people and supports sustainable relationships.

Gender equality does not mean men and women are the “same”!

It means nobody should be subject to any discrimination due to gender!
